MT. RANGE DIVIDES HUZZAH PRAIRIE AND CROOKED CREEK VALLEY
in 1840 James Willis, a pioneer, settled two miles northeast of where the Boat Mountain tower now stands. Mr. Willis was considered a prosperous farmer when the Civil War began. A Mr. McMahan, grandfather of the late Judge B. F. McMahan, had purchased a large tract of land Northwest of the James Willia farm and was operating a blacksmith shop. One mile north of Mr. Willis' farm is a large spring, which is jknown as the head of Hooza (sic) Branch. In 1850 John and James Doss purchased a large tract of land which included this spring, They built and operated the first distillery in the South part of Carroll County, (Now Boone County). The farmers would bring a bushel of corn and exchange it for a gallon of whskey. Mose (Moses Carpenter) Holmes settled about a mile Northwest of the Doss Spring in the early fifties and was a prosperous farmer when the war broke out between the states. Dr. Holmes, a half brother to Mose Holmes, (believe this to be Samuel Boyd Holmes, but will check on this), settled about a mile Northeast of Mr. Holmes' farm and about a mile south of Mt. Pleasent. Dr. Holmes was a well known Physician at that time. The present Holmes Cemetery is located on part of Dr. Holmes' farm.
