Robert's family moved from Boone County, Arkansas in 1891 to Pryor Creek, Oklahoma, Indian Territory. Artimessa said that she had her eleventh birthday while they were moving.
After settling in Leedy, Oklahoma, Robert was the blacksmith for many years. He bought 2 1/2 acres of ground with a two room house just across the railroad, west of Leedy.
