| Notes for Susan Chavis |
| Also found as Susie Belle Exley on the marriage application. Cousin to Sarah McGraw (James' second wife).

Susan and Sarah were mixed race individuals, probably Indian and Spanish/Moor. The Chavis, etc. names go back to early 1700s VA/SC. There is a ton of them; maybe related, maybe not. James Madison was from his mother: Cherokee/ on her mother's side and French/Lenni Lenape on her father's side. Martin Luker was most likely her brother. It's believed that William Luker was married at least twice to Indian women.
