Notes for Robert Holmes
Colonial land patent dates suggest that the men known as "J. Holmes" "Thomas Holms,"and "Simm Homes" were born in this period (1720's) or earlier. The spelling of the surname with an "L" and the dates suggest that "J. Holmes" might be the immigrant. This is strengthened by his proximity, in old Rowan Co. and modern Davidson Co., to Reuben Holmes. J. Holmes' 1747 land was about 30 miles west of the Four Mile Branch land which Reuben Holmes obtained in 1783. Please note these three older land owners used three different spellings of their surname.

Colonial land patent dates suggest that the men known as "George Holms,"Moses Holms," "Jesse Homes," were born in the middle of this period (1740-1760). All birth dates here are estimates based on these men being at least 20 years old before they could have arranged land patents. It is more likely that they were closer to 30 years old, like Reuben Holmes, before they could locate and have enough connections/service/money to obtain land. Their land with dates are given in the chronology below but no documentary evidence beyond the land patents and 1790 Census information has been discovered for them. And connection has not been made.

Robert Holmes (m.) Rachel _____ son Moses Holmes (b. Orange Co., NC c1770). He married Jane (Ginnet) Rogers in 1792 in Orange Co., but died in Maury Co., TN. in 1841.
