Notes for Ellender "Eleanore" Wells Holt
Notes from Brenda Scroggins:
Ellender was born in April, 1830 in Lincoln County, Tennessee. Callie Scroggins/ Hollis told Loma Scroggins/Patton that Ellender's maiden name was Wells. I have found two different books on Tennessee marriages that list her name as Eleanor Holt. Ellender could write and she spelled her first name, Ellender and not Eleanor. I believe that Wells is her maiden name and that she was married for a short while to a man named Holt before she married Smith. After Smith was killed in the Civil War. Ellender remained for several years in Tishomingo County, Mississippi. She moved her family before 1870 to Decatur County, Tennessee where she lived during the 1870 census. Sometime before 1874 she moved her family to Saline County. Arkansas. There she remarried to a widower, with five children, named Lemuel Worthy. Her son-in-law, Houston Marion Byford, was a Justice of the Peace, and performed the marriage ceremony. We have found a marriage record for an Ellen Scroggins (45) and John Worthy (50) in Saline County, Arkansas on November 7, 1875. We think this could possibly be them. Ellender would have been 45 years old that year. Before 1879 the family moved farther west to Scott County, Arkansas near the town of Black Fork. This is where they were living during the 1880 census. Ellender later moved to McGee, Oklahoma with the Byford family, as he her husband Lem Worthy had died. It appears that after her daughter, Hannah Tabitha Caroline Scroggins/Byford died in 1897, she went to live with her granddaughter Minnie Laura Scroggins/Gardner, because in 1900 Ellender was living with her in Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory (present day Bryan County, Oklahoma). Sometime after 1900 she moved to Texas with her son, William Alexander Scroggins.
She died August 19, 1904 in Cothrans, Lamar County, Texas. She was 74 years old when she died. "Cothrans" or "Cothrans Store" is now known as Tigertown. Tigertown is in Lamar County, Texas and is several miles east of Selfs in Fannin County, Texas

Earlier Notes from my mother's genealogy:
Beleived to be of Dutch descent
February 9, 1864 - Ellender Scroggins, who is now 35, applies at the Tishomingo County Courthouse in Jacinto, Mississippi for money due to her late husband, Smith Scroggins, Jr. Abner Scroggins and John Rhinehart act as witnesses and character references. Abner is still home on furlough. John Rhinehart, who is a family friend, is also a member of the 32nd Mississippi. Abner turns over Smith's personal effects to Ellender.

April 2, 1864 - Ellender Scroggins receives $134.06 from the Confederate government for back pay and clothing allowances due to Smith, Jr. at the time of his death. This doesn't sound like a lot of money today, but in 1864 it was a goodly sum. She was likely paid in Confederate script, which was almost worthless, even in the South. A Confederate Private was only paid $11.00 a month.

1870 - Ellender, who is now 41, is listed in the Decatur County, Tennessee census. The census taker spelled her name "Scrogans". Living with her is Elizabeth (15), Robert (12) and Stuart (9). Also living with her is William A. (19) and his first wife, Margaret (17). There is also a farm laborer named James Chandler from Kentucky living with them. Ellender's personal property is listed as $200.00, and William's as $100.00. Ellender later moves to Arkansas, before 1874, as William Alexander and Marga ret's son, Huston J., is listed in the 1880 census as 6 years old and born in Arkansas.

It is believed that this part of the family was already in Arkansas and had been there for a number of years. Family tradition says that the family had a reunion after the war on a creek outside of Rienzi, Mississippi and the entire family reunited and put aside hard feelings from the split during the war. This information came from Lois Loma Scroggins Patton.

On the 1900 census for Scott County, Arkansas and living near William Scroggins' family is Ellender Scroggins (70 years old). She is living with her granddaughter, Minnie Laura Scroggins Gardner and her husband, Benjamin Gardner.

Ellender Worthey dies near Cothrans in Lamar County, Texas of "intermitting fever and old age." The death certificate was signed by C. Z. Stidman. She was 74 years and 5 months old. This would put her birth date as April of 1830. "Cothrans" was known as Cothrans Store, which is now known as Tigertown, in Lamar County, Texas. There is a cemetery in Tigertown that she could possibly be buried in. This information came from the Lamar County Death Records Book #1, page 60, #598. She was supposedly living with her son, William Alexander Scroggins, when she died.
